A dedicated policing team will be deployed across Manchester’s tram and bus crime ‘hotspots’ over the next three years under a new Travelsafe Partnership pilot.
Launched on 13 April, the three-year pilot scheme will see a 16 police constables, police community support officers, special constables and security personnel deployed across Greater Manchester’s bus and tram network.
Data gathered from operators Metrolink RATP Dev UK Limited (MRDL), First Bus and Stagecoach will be used to target patrols where they are most needed.
Having a dedicated team will ‘provide expertise and knowledge that will also assist in the identification of repeat offender’, Transport for Greater Manchester has said.
The scheme will also look at crime prevention through education and school visits.
Manchester’s Metrolink tram network now stretches for 57.5 miles around the city, calling at 92 different stops. Around 30 million passenger journeys are made every year on Manchester’s trams.
