Work has started on Ilkeston’s brand new railway station.
The Derbyshire town once had three stations but the last one closed in 1967. The £9.6 million station, which has been part-funded from the government’s new station fund, will provide direct, hourly connections to Nottingham, Chesterfield and Sheffield.
Two platforms and a car park will make it easy for local people to use. The nearby Station Cafe is looking forward to an upturn in business.
Recently, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin visited the site and met staff. ‘The new station at Ilkeston will make a real difference to the local area when it opens, and will help secure economic growth across the region by linking people with jobs, and businesses with people.’
He added, ’Investing in projects like this is a central part of our long-term economic plan, as part of the record investment in our rail network between 2014 and 2019. I am pleased that work is now underway, and I look forward to it being completed as soon as possible.’

Just like new train stations to be built and to open for travellers & commuters including Old Oak Common in West London as part of Crossrail & HS2, Coventry Arena near Coventry (to be renamed as Coventry Parkway) & Bermuda Park near Nuneaton (to be renamed as Nuneaton Parkway) which both new stations are in Warwickshire, Corringham, Essex and Beaulieu Park outskirts of Chelmsford in Essex and many more new stations to open.
Plus the Wisbech line from Ely & Peterborough could also be reopened with Wisbech to have a new station and in Clacton, Essex there’s also proposed plans to build a new train station for Clacton Common Outlet Village just like Braintree Freeport Outlet has its own train station on the Witham-Braintree line.
